After roughly 10 years of advocacy, substantial financial investments, and tireless groundwork, D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and partnering agencies presented the long-awaited Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health to Ward 8.
The mayor and facility leadership hosted a ribbon cutting Thursday for the new facility at 1200 Pecan Street SE.
Gleaming with pride and excitement, Bowser dedicated the inception of the 407,000-square-foot hospital to the tireless work and dedication of local health leaders who have vowed to bring reliable, accessible health care services to Wards 7 and 8.聽聽
鈥淭his is my 10th year as mayor,鈥 said Bowser, pausing to hold back tears.聽 鈥淚 made the promise in 2015 that we would be here today, and we鈥檝e done it.鈥
Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health is the first new hospital the District has opened in 25 years.
The state-of-the-art, full-service facility will provide a host of comprehensive health care services, featuring cardiology, neurology, cancer care, maternal health and delivery services, including a six-bed well-baby nursery and a Level II NICU, and more.
Further, the five-story hospital contains 136 beds, a trauma center, five operating rooms, an ambulatory pavilion for physician offices, and a helipad for emergency transports, along with a 500-car garage.
Universal Health Services, which has committed a $75 million investment to the District鈥檚 health infrastructure, will operate the hospital in partnership with George Washington MFA, as well as Children鈥檚 National Hospital who will offer pediatric care.
At-large D.C. Council member Christina Henderson (I) shared her excitement for the grand opening of the new hospital, particularly as it relates to the dire need for quality maternal health services across the city.聽
鈥淚’m especially thrilled, [that] this is going to be the first time since 2019, that a person will be able to give birth in an actual labor and delivery unit in a hospital east of north Capitol Street,鈥 said Henderson.聽鈥淣ot east of the river, east of north Capitol Street. That’s half the city.聽 And so I look forward to welcoming our first D.C. resident born here in a couple of weeks.鈥
Tony Coleman, chief executive officer of Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health, emphasized that the community offered insight into the types of care residents hoped would be accessible at the facility, playing a critical role in final decisions about various services.
鈥淭hank you to the people who live in Ward 7 and the folks living right here in Ward 8 for giving me time to learn about what this community needs,鈥 Coleman said.聽 鈥淎s a hospital administrator, you have to sit with the people who are closest to the pain and the problems, and you have to listen. So, I want to again thank the community for welcoming me, sitting me down, and showing me over the past year and a half what you need.鈥
