The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, announced the 2024 Festival for Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

Marking the date that the last enslaved people learned of their freedom, the month of June and the 19th day were combined to form the word Juneteenth.

The event is meant for all ages and will take place on June 15 at Watkins Regional Park from noon-5 p.m. Activities include:

  • Live entertainment from the Chuck Brown Band, Trouble Funk, Luther Relives Tribute and Brencore All Stars.
  • Visual art exhibition featuring Jeffrey Felten-Green.
  • Art Activities with Arts on a Roll.
  • History Activity highlighting the Sankofa Mobile Museum.
  • Food, merchandise vendors and nonprofit exhibitors.

The 2024 Juneteenth festival is free. For more information, go to pgparks.com/event.list/juneteenth2024.
